Anger is perhaps one of the most difficult emotions to handle for many of us. It could be a rogue driver on the streets or a close family member’s actions at home. In our daily lives, we come across so many incidents that trigger anger.

When we express anger, it leads to a series of counter-reactions from others and even long-term consequences. But when we repress, it goes down into our system almost as a poison. Now scientists say a major portion of our diseases is psychosomatically caused by repressed emotions. Repressed anger also leads to sadness, for sadness is nothing but passive anger. Osho gives us a third alternative – to transcend anger.

So how do we transcend anger? The key to Osho’s insights is watchfulness and playfulness. This is not a theory in which mere intellectual understanding is enough. This is something that has to be understood in our system and it is possible only through repeated practice. And there are many meditation methods developed by Osho that will help. You can see one such technique in this YouTube video

Osho explains a few things about anger that we must understand. He says

“The psychology of anger is that you wanted something and somebody prevented you from getting it… Now, this frustrated energy becomes anger – anger against the person who has destroyed the possibility of fulfilling your desire.”

Osho says one can avoid this arising of anger by just being a little playful. “In life, remember one thing: never desire anything as intensely as if it is a question of life and death. Be a little playful,” he says.

He emphasizes that he is not asking us to stop desiring. Any effort to stop our desires will again lead to repression. “I am saying, desire but let your desire be playful. If you can get it, good. If you cannot get it, perhaps it was not the right time – we will see next time. Learn something of the art of the player.”

Osho asks us to go to the roots of the anger, which is always some desire. “Once this settles in your being then everything is acceptable.” Once anger disappears, then it leaves tremendous energy of love and compassion.

Our daily experiences also do show that anger takes away a lot of our energy. In a rage, the body is filled with a bundle of energy. Another way of overcoming anger is to find ways to safely release this energy. Osho has given another simple meditation that can be tried out every night before going to sleep. The duration of this meditation is 60 mins and it has two steps.

Step 1: “Go Bananas”. Sit on your bed and do everything crazy your mind wants to, that people do when they are angry, destructive, and violent. But don’t destroy valuable things. Tear up bits of paper, for example. Beat a pillow.

Step 2: “Apologize”. Then if you want, like the primitives, you can go and apologize to the person you were ‘beating’ or being angry with.

Osho says our anger must be expressed privately, not on others.

“Once and for all understand that every problem is yours, so it has to be solved in your privacy. Don’t wash your dirty linen in public places; there is no need. Why unnecessarily involve other people?”
